Great hike... trail well laid out. This trail is challenging for me because it is pretty consistently steep in some places, particularly near the bottom. Parking lot is not plowed during the winter. Good amount of people on the trail so I felt fine solo (it was a Saturday). You can get a view at the top from a fire tower but unfortunately it was pretty crowded so we decided to get a partial view at a quiet spot on the trail instead. In 2010 Okemo opened up the Adventure Zone in the base of Jackson Gore. Okemo Mountain Resort is a ski resort located in the town of Ludlow, Vermont, United States. In 1982, the owners decided to sell the resort rather than go into bankruptcy. As others have mentioned it’s a solid 6 miles up and down, probably a hair over. CNL sold the properties to Och-Ziff Capital Management in 2016. Walk around the gate and up the gravel surfaced work road approximately 0.2 miles. In that sense, it's good for active kids 8 and up who are willing to hike for this long. Did this hike on Sunday, 8/30. While some of the main thoroughfares are groomed nightly in this area, trails like Outrage and Forest Bump remain natural. Visitors can also drive up the mountain on the paved road known as the trail "Mountain Road" in the winter. Great hike, the brook following the trail was nice to check out in a couple spots. The 1,700-vertical-foot cruisers, such as Chief, World Cup, and Jolly Green Giant are accessed from the Sunburst Six. Pretty consistent climb, very well marked and maintained. The trail then crosses a stony brook bed (2.0 mi) and climbs to an overlook (2.3 mi) with views to the north (Salt Ash Mountain, Shrewsbury Peak, Killington Peak, Little Killington Peak, Mendon Peak) and west (Taconic mountain range). Great hike. Hiking and snowshoeing are popular activities on the 3-mile long Healdville Trail that accesses the summit of Okemo Mountain and the refurbished fire tower that provides spectacular 360° views. Certain trail names also continue to preserve this sentiment, such as Chief, Tomahawk, Wardance, Sachem, and Arrow, all of which are present on today's trail map. This was definitely one of our most favorite fire tower hikes so far!
Took us about 3 hours round trip. According to the scholarship of John C. Huden, the name means Chieftain in Chippewa and a louse in Abnaki. It leads to the Plank Bridge, a wooden bridge spanning a wide ravine with a river running through it. Nice trail, moderate up hill. Okemo Mountain via Healdville Trail is a 5.6 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Mount Holly, Vermont that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. Adjacent to the course is Willie Dunn's Grille, a restaurant open every day during the summer (with breaks in between) for lunch and dinner. The trail climbs steadily on switchbacks to a plateau (1.5 mi) where the trail flattens out and follows the mountain contour. This area is known for its more difficult terrain, including most of the double-black diamond trails. Very nice moderate trail. The main area also includes runs directed at more advanced skiers, such as Searle's Way, Sel's Choice, Nor'Easter, Defiance, and the Amp Energy Superpipe (Amp Energy sponsored halfpipe and snowboard park). I'm in ok shape, but definitely needed to pause to catch my breath. There were fires, floods, and competition from the West. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Great day and if you do the trail the tower is a must! Drive up the paved road and park in the wide gravel area at the end of the road being careful not to block the gate.
